Metro Taxis : was formed on 29th December 1975 by a group of owner drivers who collectively took over “Skytax”, a company operating in Stockport for some years previous. At that time they became the biggest co-operative the borough had ever known.The earliest known taxi service offered in Stockport dates back to 1925, when STO 2901 (480 2901) was called bycustomer’s needing ataxi. The number was taken over by Metro Taxis and to this day there has been no break in continuity in terms of a taxi service being available on this number, therefore making it the oldest taxi service in Stockport.Metro began to grow in the 1980’s and early 90’s and the arrival of Roy Pickering also saw the expansion of the Private Hire fleet for the first time. Metro a previously “non profit” making organisation now began to show real promise, with the introduction of a data dispatch system, eliminating the need for voice contact.
During the late 90’s Roy Pickering began to purchase more and more shares and at the turn of the century took sole control of the company, working alongside Alan Barnett. A partnership that has stood for nearly 25 years with a strong and experienced managerial team beneath them.
2007 saw Metro move into the brand new state of the art operations centre in Vernon Mill, Stockport. Offering some of the most advanced taxi booking services available including; Autobook, Internet booking and booking via text message.
This new year, 2009 has seen some of the most dramatic changes any taxi company will have seen with Guaranteed pick up, price match and now uniformed drivers.

The Company: Metro Taxis Ltd is a broad spectrum Taxi Company comprising a fleet of approximately 400 vehicles including Saloon/Estate Cars, Hackney Cabs, 5/8 seat mpv/minibuses and 16 seat pcv minibuses. 48 of the fleet are wheelchair friendly several of these being Tail Lift vehicles for larger wheelchairs.
Infrastructure: The Company operates from 4 buildings which include a 3000sq ft call centre, Town Centre Reception office, Head office with compound and workshops and a small satellite Kiosk in an outer area of the Borough. Our fleet management system which has been customised by the in house IT department features multiple redundancy in all systems and is one of the most advanced in the UK; many of its unique features are now being adopted by other large taxi fleets.
Company Ethos: We source the products and services that we use from within The Borough wherever possible. We support local charitable effort always and sponsor several local Sports Clubs down to Junior Level. We have a dedicated customer service team with a well developed complaints procedure which is recognised by our own Licensing Authority as an example of “Best Practise” in all areas. Most of our drivers have passed the NVQ level 2 in Passenger Transport through courses organised by The Company. The qualification will become mandatory for all our drivers at the beginning of 2012
Relevant Operations: We operate Freephones in locations throughout The Borough; many of these are on a franchise basis. Sites include Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, most of the larger Hotels and The NHS Trust Hospital.
